Thanks for the tip Don. Excellent column. Billie agrees and has encouraged me to put together a post on corporate welfare.

Dear Martin,

Delighted to hear that you and Stacie did the cross-USA trip. I've done it a couple of times, and, in one way or another, it's always an amazing eye-opener.

I'm writing to call your attention to an LA Times (yes, they're still actually printing a newspaper . . . of sorts) piece by Michael Hiltzik regarding California's tax hand-outs to corporations and their trade associations, all in the name of preserving and attracting jobs. If you've not already read it, I think you'll find it worth a look: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/money_co/2010/06/michael-hiltzik-the-corporate-gravy-train.html.

Best to you and Stacie (and, of course, Billie, who, knowing your family's level of literacy, probably will read this).

Thanks for the good question. The answer is emphatically no. But the bill is still in play, now in a conference committee. I think the legislation is important as a first step in what will be a longer process because of the state of our political process. I don't think we can just throw up our hands because the politics are so frustrating. We have to stay engaged & make sure our voices are heard. As both the Obama campaign and the tea party demonstrate, people who don't usually participate can have a dramatic impact.

Does the bill that the Senate just passed address the 10 issues cited in your article? Thanks for your answer.

Harvey, thank you for this heartfelt memorium for Sol Price, whom most of us knew simply as the guy who owned the discount stores we shopped at. It's wonderful to know what a gentleman and decent human being he was, also. Who are the Sol Prices today? I hope, though I sense, he was of a dying breed: entrepreneurs with global vision, compassion, and personal integrity. Thank you for this tribue to Sol.

Thank you for your voice Harvey. Thank you for your ambition which is not motivated by money but by your heart and soul. It is such a delight to know you. I will pass this on.
